I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day. I love this holiday. Stars and stripes waving everywhere, the smoky smell of BBQ and fireworks in the air, macaroni salad and corn dogs for dinner, salt water taffy dotting the ground, people adorned in red, white, and blue, feeling patriotic, and the fact that we're all celebrating something we love, together, even though our lives and ideas can be so different. It's good. I love America, love to celebrate her.
Mom and Dad came down to join us for the celebrations, so did Andrew and family.
We had a picnic.......
.... so did the ants.
While we waited for it to get dark enough for fireworks to start, the kids made nests out of dried grass left from the lawn mower. Mary Kate built hers and filled it with coconut macaroon eggs. They were yummy eggs.
The kids love Grandpa. I do too.
We parked the trucks across the street from the park and sat in the truck beds on our lawn chairs. This provided a perfect view and a quick, crowd avoiding get away afterwards. My favorite part of the fireworks was the collective ooohhhs and aahhhhs form the crowd when a particularly large or bright firework filled the sky. That and the gold fireworks with all the swirls.
What a great country we live in. I know I mostly take it for granted, not having experienced any other way of living, but each year, as I'm sitting in my lawn chair watching all the colors bursting above me, I feel so grateful, so blessed, to be an American.
God bless America.

Glad you had a great 4th! We really are lucky to live in America! (oh yeah, and those ants looked like they were happy to be Americans too! :)
Now that's an all-American 4th BBQ. I especially like the ants. I hope the eggs hatched into yummy coconut maroon birds.
I love the picture of the kids marching and waving flags in a row. So cute and patriotic. I love the 4th too and am glad yours turned out so well. I'll be in UT next week, can you come to Bountiful one day?
I agree with Kimberly. Your top picture is about the cutest 4th of July Parade that I've seen! It ought to be on National TV or YouTube or something! I also love this holiday! Great spirit, great family memories that go waaaay back!
I frequently feel that life should be accompanied by a constant soundtrack, and as I look at that top picture...with the parade of delightful children, and equally delightful flags....I feel that I need to have "You're a Grand Old Flag" playing in the background. Don't you think that would be appropriate?
PS...your brother came this weekend to help my Mom put in her new sod. As I was thanking him...he said, "Now, which one are you?" I said, "I'm Lara, I'm the oldest. No one knows me." Then he said, "are you the one that blogs with my sister?" You bet! That's me! I had to say..."I LOVE Jill...never met her...but I love her!" Isn't the internet a weird thing??
I have to echo everyone else. That top pic is my favorite ever. The lighting is wonderful and I think it maybe holds a little symbolism regarding freedom of spirit. You are right, though, we may not be a perfect country, but we are still a great one and so very blessed to live here. Happy 4th!
Oh, I love your flag waving children! Sarah once led a similar parade at our apartment - I still have such fond memories of that. One of my favorite holidays ever!
My all time favorite picture is the one of you and Mike. I love the last one where you are hugging him and he looks blissfully happy. You look so peaceful and content to have such a man. I do love the child's parade also.
I don't know why Benson's name pops up as me but you know who I am.
Looks like you had so much fun! I am so excited to see you all soon. I love you. I agree with you too.
I agree that we are lucky to live in America too, and we are blessed! famiies are forever
That is a great way to celebrate the 4th. Mary Kate already looks bigger, she is so cute!
