I've never understood the need that some people have to enter races such as triathlons, marathons and the like. I don't know why people want to abuse their bodies in such ways. I've never understood the "prove myself" nature of these events, so when Mike told me he had entered the Spudman triathlon I responded with a roll of my eyes. (I know, I'm a really supportive wife).
This weekend we packed up the truck, drove four hours to the lovely farming town of Burley Idaho, and Mike did his thing. I'll admit that up until he took his first plunge in the ice cold water of the Snake river I was pretty apathetic about the whole thing, but once he started that front crawl (without a wet suit like 98% of the other participants were wearing) I got a funny knot down in my gut. I realized just how much I wanted him to do well and finish this race. I also found myself very concerned for his safety, which turned out to be a justified concern since one of the participants actually drowned during his swim.
My friend Alison (who's husband Paul was also racing), and I, frantically drove around with all the kids and tried to follow the racer's path. We managed to find Paul four times, but no sign of Michael. That knot in my stomach got a little tighter as I realized that Mike was WAY behind Paul. Luckliy I caught a glimpse of Mike at the last bike turn and yes, he was WAY behind Paul.
We made our way to the finish line and waited anxiously for Paul to cross knowing that Mike would be a while behind him. The announcer was calling out each racer's name as they finished. I was waiting to hear Paul's name and suddenly I hear the announcer yell, "AND HERE COMES MIKE DICKEY!" Holy Cow, there he was, and he beat Paul! Luckily I got my camera ready in time to snap a blurry picture of him crossing the finish line.
I have to admit folks that I was so excited for and proud of Mike. It was an exhilarting feeling to see someone you love so much accomplish something difficult and do it well. Despite the fact that his medal depicts a running potato in sweat bands, I want Mike to wear it with pride. My mom made sure that Mike did not overlook the fact that there were girls who beat him, but Mike finished his first triathlon in 2 hours and 34 minutes. What a MAN! Now maybe I can understand and appreciate a little why people enter these things, not that I ever will, I'm not that crazy!
