On Loose Teeth, Baby Goats, and Success…

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. It seems we’ve been very busy with all kind of odds and ends. I thought I’d just post about a few of the highlights, starting with….

…my little boy losing his first tooth.

While riding in the backseat with Jonathan, Mary Kate discovered that he had a very wiggly tooth. I then used my special ‘granddaughter of a dentist’ skills and popped that tooth right out, quick as a snap, no problem. As soon as Jonathan tasted the blood in his mouth and realized that he had a hole where once there was none, he begged and pleaded with me to put his tooth right back in!

Unfortunately there was no going back, but luckily the tooth fairy brought a couple of Dum-Dum suckers and two quarters which seemed to make him feel much better. He even shared is tooth fairy loot with Jeffrey. Two happy boys.

(next post…’Baby Goats’)

Baby Goats

As sad as we were to see our dear friends the Crafts move from our neighborhood, we are sure loving our frequent visits to their new homestead. They moved to a charming little two acre spread up in Lehi, and have turned their new place into a mini family farm. They have a horse, a flock of chickens, a dog, and have just added two new baby goats to their collection. Clara and Bella, the cutest little baby goats you’ll ever see. We’re all enchanted.

The babies still need to be bottle fed, which is great, because it’s delightful entertainment for the whole family to watch them suck down a bottle of milk in warp speed. It’s really something to behold.

And they love to climb up on anything and everything. A person just laying in the grass is something to climb on. They especially love climbing on Stan. He doesn’t seem to mind though, even if they pee on him. Which they do.

The Craft’s horse is named McGyver, nameed thus because he’s a tricky one and figured out how to open his own gate latch. He’s a gentle horse and doesn’t seem to mind kids. When we visit, my kids love going for rides. We finally got Jonathan to take a ride this last time. He’s been a bit reluctant, but I really should get that kid a cowboy hat because he took to riding like a pro.

Even Mike’s been getting a few cowboy lessons. All he needs now is a Stetson, some Wranglers, and some cowboy boots. Somehow, saddling a horse in Tevas doesn’t seem quite right.

Between goat feedings and horse rides Mary Kate even learned how to ride a pogo stick. There’s certainly never a dull moment at the Craft farm.

Thanks Craft family for sharing your new little slice of heaven with us and helping us get in touch with our inner farmer. Let us know when the baby kittens arrive. We’ll be right up!

Last week I helped my brother Jeff for BYU’s graduation ceremonies. Jeff works for Herff Jones, a company that provides caps, gowns, tassels…anything a persons needs to look the part when graduating from college. It’s quite the undertaking to make sure every graduate is outfitted correctly.

byu, craft farm, tooth 017

We handed out hundreds of caps and gowns in all shapes and sizes. I measured many a head circumferences to make sure people got the correct size of cap. Man, some people have really big heads! It must be all that newly acquired knowledge stored up there.

Then there’s the tassels. Everyone must have the correct color, depending on which college, or what kind of degree they’ve earned. It’s very exciting, and a bit exhausting, so it was a good thing that BYU catering provided us with plenty of cookies to munch on….I liked the macaroons personally.

Every time I help Jeff do this graduation thing I find myself really wishing I could go back to college and earn another degree. Someday I’m going to, when the time is right. I’m a big fan of education. A women, about my age, came through who had just earned her degree in American Studies. I’m sure it’s a perfectly worthless degree as far as marketability is concerned, but I think it sounds fascinating. A little history, a bit of literature, some art, music, civics….all things American. What’s not to love?

As I handed each person their packages, I offered them a hearty congratulations. Earning a college degree is a big accomplishment and one that they should be proud of. Although, after finishing my latest read…..

…a fabulous book that I highly recommend, about what makes people successful, I hope all those graduates offered gratitude to the many people who went before who made it possible for them to be in the right place at the right time, with the right opportunities at their finger tips, because according to Malcolm Gladwell, no one achieves success by personal effort alone. Those in our society who we see as being successful have also been the most lucky and have been the beneficiaries of the best opportunities the world has to offer. This book really changed the way I view myself, and the world. You should read it. You’ll never look at success, yours or anyone else’s, the same way again.

Ready, Set….Celebrate!

boys_6_birthday_2010 009

We had quite the party to celebrate the boys turning six. I let them have their first ‘friend’ party this year. The boys chose a car theme and invited the neighborhood. We had a rip roaring time!

Our neighbor’s brother goes around to garage sales and different DI’s and buys up used Power Wheels vehicles. He then puts his own extra strength batteries in them so they run super fast and extra long. We rented these cars from him for the party and had ourselves a mini derby. The kids were thrilled to death with this. We let them drive, race, and peel out until the batteries ran out of juice. We had some seriously good drivers too. These kids were skilled!

boys_6_birthday_2010 084

The dune buggy was the favorite. It had the most pizzazz and was the most fun to drive. We had to take turns with that one.

My favorite was watching the boys take the girls for a spin. So sweet.

After the derby we headed back home to finish up the festivities….

Lots of Thomas the Train items this year. Very happy boys as a result.

boys_6_birthday_2010 165

….a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and then cupcakes and popsicles all around.

…..very happy boys.

Later that night when I was tucking the boys into bed, Jeffrey said,

“Mom, guess what my favorite part of the day was.”

“I don’t know Jeffrey, what was your favorite part of the day?”

“The birthday part!”

It really was fun. Happy Birthday my boys!

Happy Birthday Dave

IMG_0004

Today is my father-in-law’s birthday. Happy Birthday Dave!

For those of you who don’t know my father-in-law, I feel sorry for you, because to know him is to love him. He’s a soft spoken, kind hearted, nature loving, hard working, pancake making, star gazing, house fixing, picture taking, wild flower sighting, engine building, grandchild loving, family man, and he loves my strawberry jam.

I’ve never seen him angry in all my life. Not even when our dog clawed his newly remodeled bathroom to shreds. He’s shown nothing but love to me and to my family all the years I’ve know him.

My kids adore Grandpa Dave and let me show you why…..

I mean seriously, what’s not to love? He’s a perfect grandpa.

Thank you Dave for all you do for my kids, for me, for Michael. We love you so much. Hope you have the happiest of birthdays, because you deserve it!

Life Changing

Six years ago today my baby boys were born. Lately I’ve been thinking a great deal about that day. As their birthday has been approaching, and their excitement rising, the boys have peppered me with questions about the day they were born. They’ve wanted to see pictures too. They’ve wanted a visual.  So I’ve answered their questions and shown them the snap shots and as a result, I’ve found myself getting lost in the memoires as well. Mostly because it was a time for me that was life changing beyond belief. So today, I feel like I want to write down that story, because I never have, I’ve never wanted to…. until now. So here it is, in a nut shell. (Long post my friends, but I want it for my journal, so consider yourself warned)….

Because Jonathan was breech and blocking the natural exit, and because I was toxemic at 35 weeks, I was scheduled for a C-section at 5:30 in the evening on April 9, 2004. Mike and I packed up our little hospital bag and drove together the three blocks to the hospital to bring our two long awaited for, and premature baby boys into the world. I remember being quite calm that evening considering that I was about to give birth to twins. If I had know what was about to happen to our relatively quite, peaceful life I might have felt differently.

DSCF0059

When we arrived at the hospital I was quickly prepared for surgery. Mike was suited up as well. There were doctors scattered everywhere  in the operating room. We had been told that there was a good chance that our babies wouldn’t be able to breathe when they were born. We were told they could have any number of serious complications due to their early arrival. Still, I was surprised by how calm I felt. I was just excited to see the faces of the two tiny creatures who had been causing such a ruckus in my belly for so many months.

We decided that whichever baby came out first would be Jonathan, and the second would be Jeffrey….

DSCF0049

As each baby was born (that’s Jonathan above) I was allowed a brief glimpse, not a touch mind you, because my arms were strapped to the operating table, just a tiny glimpse, and then my boys were whisked away by the doctors to be thoroughly examined, poked, prodded, and hooked up to all sorts of life supporting machines and tubes…..

DSCF0066

….I remember feeling amazement and deep gratitude for the team of skilled doctors and nurses who worked so quickly and thoroughly. I new that my tiny boys and I were in good hands. The one in yellow there is our neighbor Dr. Arnold. How nice it was to have a good friend as our babies’ pediatrician. And Dr. Parker, my incredible OB, I’ll love him forever, with his winking twitch and his colorful rainbow suspenders….

Now is where I’d like to tell the story like most mothers tell about the moment their babies are born. Now is where I’d like to tell about how I felt an instant and overwhelming bond with my little ones. I’d love to say that I held them and marveled at their smallness and the miracle of new life, that I shed tears of happiness and love, feeling so grateful to be a mother, but that unfortunately wasn’t my experience…. at least not then, not for awhile. My babies were quickly taken to the NICU for careful watching and I was wheeled to my recovery room.

And then….that night…….the postpartum came.

There are many theories flying around out there that attempt  to explain why some mothers experience severe postpartum and others not. Maybe it’s extreme stress? Could be hormone fluctuations, or that giving birth is too much of a shock for the body? It could possibly be that the natural, motherly instincts shift into crazy overdrive for some people, or maybe that a person has a genetic predisposition towards postpartum? It’s probably a combination of all of these but, nobody seems to know for certain. All I know is that I had never (nor since) been so turned upside down and twisted inside out as I was the first several months of my babies lives. It was for me…a nightmare… a horrible, fuzzy blur. I remember visiting the babies in the NICU, praying desperately to feel all those feelings I was supposed to feel as a mother, praying to feel something besides overwhelming anxiety and dread. I could hardly even hold my new little ones without distress.

DSCF0097

DSCF0091

I was a total wreck of a human being, and poor Mike had to step up and take over. He was a total champ. He and my sweet mama took over my job beautifully. I still remember the dreadful day when Mike reluctantly had to return to work. As he went to the door to leave, Mary Kate, who was only 4 at the time, broke down into tears, crying, “If you go to work, who will take care of the babies?!” Even at that age she knew, had observed, that I was of no use.

The boys were only in the NICU 7 days until we got the green light to take them home. Even though I wasn’t anywhere near ready to take on the challenge of caring for premature twins, and completely scared out of my mind, I do remember being grateful that they were as healthy as they were. Aren’t they so tiny though? It’s hard to believe that they used to be so tiny.

I have to insert here that whenever I see someone, for instance and most recently, my sister-in-law Laura, snuggling, cuddling, and simply breathing in the sweetness and preciousness of their new born babies, I get so jealous. It’s something I’ve never experienced in that way and I hope new mothers who get to experience it right, don’t take it for granted…. but, I digress….

In looking back, I see so clearly just how incredibly blessed we were and just how much love was shown to our family during those months. Friends and family really stepped up, offering us incredible love and support. My heart is full to bursting when I think about all the people who were there to help us through that time. People brought meals, helped take care of our children, lent a listening ear, gave much needed sympathy and advice, kept our house clean, provided shoulders to cry on, and even stayed up late at night just playing cards with me as a distraction from the panic and depression. I’m also eternally grateful for the professionals who over saw my mental health and helped me find myself again. We were truly blessed and watched over by God. Our prayers were sincerely answered, mostly through the love and service of others. It was a difficult, but beautiful time. We made it through too, and stronger than when we began.

Something else I’ve been thinking about now that it’s been six years since all the craziness……A few nights ago I was clicking through pictures on my computer and I stumbled across these beautiful photos…..

mk_7_birthday 046

mk_7_birthday 077

mk_7_birthday 084

They were taken by my dad on a day that he and my mom took the kids to the zoo, then to their house, in order to give me a much need break from the constant chaos. By that time I was thankfully free from the all the postpartum guck, but as I looked at these pictures the other night, I was filled with such a sense of….I don’t know…maybe longing…maybe regret….maybe sadness. My heart just twisted when I saw these photos.

My dad had captured something in those beautiful shots, something that made me realize that because I had dealt with that nasty postpartum for so long, and then struggled to figure out how to raise two baby boys at once, and do it in harmony with the powerful, type A personality that is mine, I went into…well, let’s call it… survival mode. I was in survival mode for so long. Too long. I think I missed so much because of this. I didn’t enjoy my babies like I should have. I didn’t savor. I just survived.

Of course I did have good times. It was when the boys were about six months old that I starting feeling all those feelings I had so longed to feel when they were born, when I truly felt ‘the bond’ that I had waited for, but I didn’t savor even that as much as I should have. I so wish I would have.

I know there is many a mother out there that can relate to these feelings. Wishing they had savored their children’s smallness, their baby-ness more. I know it’s a common feeling. Also, I’m not one to waste inordinate amounts of energy on regret, so I’m not going to let it bring me down to the depths of despair or anything, but I’m vowing now to do better. In fact I think I have been doing better.

I love the age my boys are now. I love almost everything they say and do. Five is such a fun age, and six, it seems is just as good, maybe better. My boys are growing up fast….too fast. They need their mama less and less all the time. They won’t be little for much longer and so I will savor.

I feel so blessed to have my two crazy boys. It’s been an incredible six years with lots of ups and downs. Heaven knows we’ve been challenged, and stretched, but, like I said before, it’s been nothing short of life changing. In a good way.

And today we celebrate.

Behind the Wheel

easter 2010 175

On Easter Sunday my mom and dad hosted an exciting and different kind of egg hunt for the grandkids….

easter 2010 170

….each kid was allowed to find 5 eggs that were expertly hidden in the backyard….

easter 2010 194

….the eggs were filled with exciting things such as… a few dollar bills or a stack of coins, a coupon for a package of fruit snacks, a coupon for a hug and kiss from various aunts or uncles in the room, or a piece of paper with an invitation written on it to do something special all alone with Grandma or Grandpa. For example, Mary Kate got an invitation to go with Grandma to lunch and to see the beautiful flowers at Temple Square. How awesome is that! Jonathan got an invitation to go with Grandpa to Pace’s to get a rainbow slush.

It was Jeffrey though, that hit the mother load…inside one of his eggs was an invitation to go with Uncle Jeff to the church parking lot to drive his brand new SUV. If any of you know my son Jeffrey, you know that there is absolutely nothing that would excite him more. I wish I had video taped his reaction when I read him that strip of paper. He freaked out!

easter 2010 201

Here he is with Uncle Jeff just before his wild ride. Look at that grin on his face. His dream were about to come true.

easter 2010 208

Jeffrey has mad skills behind the wheel. I think he was born with them. Uncle Jeff just pushed the gas and let Jeffrey have full control of the steering wheel. That kid can steer like a pro! He can even park perfectly between the lines. He likes to drive wild and crazy though. After two minutes Jonathan (who begged to come along for the ride) and I, had to get out an watch from the sidewalk due to some serious motion sickness….

easter 2010 211

easter 2010 212

Uncle Jeff even let the boys play with the sun roof and all the various controls in the car. I seriously think it was the highlight of Jeffrey’s life, second only to the time he got to drive around the block with Uncle Brad. Jeffrey is already planning the next time he will drive with Uncle Jeff at the parking lot. I’m not sure any of our stomachs can take it though. Sorry about that motion sickness Uncle Jeff! Your the bomb though to give Jeffrey the thrill of his life.

Thanks mom and dad for that awesome egg hunt. My kids are incredibly lucky to have grandparents like you. I wish I could come to Temple Square with you, but Mary Kate has forbidden it and Jonathan says there is no way I can come to Pace’s with he and Grandpa. He says maybe Jeffrey can come though, since he let him come in the car with Uncle Jeff.
