I just had a very nostalgic evening. Remember months ago, how I decided it was time I introduced my daughter to some good old, classic cinema? Well, I’ve been doing that… little by little. Tonight we watched one that I love….’Here Comes the Groom,’ starring Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman.
When I lived with my Grandma Winnie during college, we would watch this one together often. It was one of her favorites. Mine too. I had forgotten this, but there’s a character in the movie by the name of Winnie, and also a little girl named Suzy, which is the nickname I call my dog Winnie. No wonder I love this movie!
‘Here Comes the Groom’ tells the story of Pete Garvey (Crosby), a quick witted foreign correspondent who adopts two French war orphans and only has five days to win back the heart of his childhood sweetheart (Wyman), who happens to be engaged to a millionaire, before he has to send the children back to France.
The best part of this film, aside from the wonderful performances by the stars, is the catchy song ‘In the Cool, Cool, Cool, of the Evening’ that Bing and Jane sing together at the office of her wealthy fiancĂ©e. I can’t stop singing it. That’s okay though because it reminds me of Grandma!
So, if you’re a fan of classic movies, or a fan of Bing or Jane, here’s a little treat for you. Watch only if you want this song stuck in your head for awhile……

Thanks, Jill! I just put in a request for this movie at my library. How did MK like it?
How fun to rediscover movies with your daughter! I've been recording some of the Oscar movies TCM has been playing this month. Bing is in there a lot. Jane Wyman not so much. Ha!
Delightful!
Added to the Netflix queue.
I wish the movie industry could still make such clean entertainments for the public. Actors back then have true talents.
Thanks for the movie recommendations, also keep up with the book one. I love a great read!
Why don't we do that now? Break out into song as we are talking not caring who hears or sees us. We need to be singing more, don't you think. There's something therapeutic about it.
Thanks for the memories! Some of those movies we watched so many times --you know the back of the hand thing. That was like seeing a dear old friend again.
Sometimes I think I have a decent knowledge of old movies....but then you always throw in ones I haven't seen.
I have this most awesome picture that my mom gave me in college. I can't remember EXACTLY what it said but it was something about how I'll dance into heaven with Gene Kelly. It's awesome.
And I had to mention that Man of LaMancha comment you made on my blog a week ago. I had forgotten that your Grandma had that picture. But now that you mention it...I have a vague memory of that. Funny. We have it because Patrick and I were in that play together in college...and that poster was my wedding gift to him. We kinda collect things from that story. Crazy. I'm glad you noticed it. That memory was in there somewhere just waiting to come out!!
Thanks for another recommendation! Mike and I watched a couple of the ones you recommended last time and enjoyed them both! (One was Monkey Business, and the other was the one with Gary Cooper...for the life of me, I can't remember the title.)
This is one of my all time favorites!
