“Yeah, A Basketball Weekend!”

basketball weekend 055

Our friends Trevor, Amy, and kids came for a visit this week. They came all the way from Canada just to attended Jimmer Fredette’s last basketball game at BYU. Yes, the Johnstons are that devoted to Jimmer and the BYU Cougars. They even named their dog Jimmer, years ago when Jimmer Fredette was just a freshman.

Tickets were purchased for this game months, and months ago. Not being much of a sports fan, I wasn’t sure a ticket should be wasted on me. But, it was pounded into my brain over and over that my ticket was an extremely hot commodity and I should be proud to be in possession of it. I was also earnestly promised I would not be disappointed when I was able to witness, first hand, real Jimmer mania.

Well…I witnessed it…and MANIA it was!

Despite my reservations leading up to it, and despite how loathed I am to admit it, I actually had a very good time at the game. It was all kinds of fun…cheering, hot dogs, band music, The Wave, and sitting next to my husband who was totally in his element. (Crunching away on the best Kettle Corn I ever ate didn’t hurt either).

A college basketball game is all about the atmosphere, and BYU most certainly didn’t disappoint. Neither did Jimmer. Amy and Trevor declared the game  ‘definitely worth the trip.’

Amy and I have been close friends for many years and have much in common…with the exception of one HUGE thing…Amy loves basketball! Her love borders on obsession, and my basketball deprived, sports-less brain can’t quite seem to grasp this difference between us. Amy tries hard to share her deep and abiding love of the game with her lame, sports-retarded friend, but usually to no avail. I’m hopeless.

Here’s and example of what goes on when Amy and I are together….

Friday night Amy and I had planned to go shopping (the love of shopping being one thing we do have in common), but Mike informed us that he had a ward basketball game to play. Our ward was playing for the Stake championship, a big deal for the team. Mike’s long arms and mad skills on the court were needed. I suggested to Amy that maybe we should skip shopping to go to the basketball game (to support Mike, of course). My motive was to be a good wife, but Amy’s was different…she didn’t even hesitate…she clapped her hands excitedly and exclaimed…”Yeah! A basketball weekend!”

Believe me…that there is a sentence you’ll never hear coming out of my mouth! (I’m so glad you love me Amy, even though I don’t share your love for basketball!)

It really was a basketball weekend, but there were other things too. Like…

…tubs full of clean boys…

…a cinnamon and raspberry roll tutorial with Trevor as the student (he likes to bake), followed by a cinnamon and raspberry roll eating extravaganza with the Hansen’s joining in. (Dani, the raspberry rolls were amazing! I liked them even better than the cinnamon)

…and also, the usual kid entertainment, courtesy of Amy. My favorite thing about Amy is how awesome she is with my kids. She really loves them, you can tell by the way she treats them. I’ll always appreciate Amy for that.

For now the Johnstons have left us once again to return to the land up north, but we are looking forward to their annual summer visit in just a few short months. We are lucky to have good friends like the Johnstons, even if they do love that game with the orange ball and the iron hoop….what’s it called?

(Trevor, I apologize once again for putting you on the spot in Sunday School. I should have known you’d be taking notes)

In celebration of Senior’s week and Jimmer’s last game at BYU, the student section of BYU performed a Flash Mob dance at the game. It was fun to see, even though not perfect. I like thousands of people moving all together in the same fashion. It’s cool.

Some of us sports-lovers have learned we just cannot pass on our passion for sports to others no matter how hard we try. :)

ok, that last comment was from me, Jill. Darn kid having his own Google account and it not asking me which account I wanted to use.

I'm with you girlfriend, I just don't have it in me to love sports the way those in my family love them. I just go to socialize :) (and eat the food! :) Looks like a lot of fun though. And I loved that movie! That alone would have been worth going to see.

I loved my surprise...I don't know if you know that I read your blog all the time, I don't think I have ever posted a comment! Shocking, I know because you know me and how much I love to talk:) This was an honor for me, a Jill Dickey blog post all for me...well, Trevor and the kids were included too!! I am sitting in our hotel room on the way home and feel more special than before not only because of the kind things you said but the act of kindness, of coming to the game and leaving the book at home!!! Cheers!!

I know what an avid sports fan you are Jill. You don't need to hide anymore.

Also, those cinnamon rolls look heavenly.

What a perfect week with a girlfriend! you need to stop posting pictures of food on your blog, or else you must include recipes. Otherwise it's just torture.

Hey, I was at that same game with my family! Of course, I spent most of the second half out in the hall watching it on TV because my 9 month old son didn't appreciate all the BYU fan energy!

Those cinnamon rolls look super good!

Awesome visit. It's alwyas great when the Johnstons come down. I'm still mad at them for moving though.

And I must give Jill credit. I never thought I'd see her so into a game. Great game though.

Also, the cinnamon rolls were amazing.

Fun times. I'm glad you reached beyond yourself to enjoy a basketball game with Amy. Now that's a true friend. I also have enjoyed a little Jimmermania with Stan and Benson - the game where he made 52 points and the championship game - not so fun. We weren't in Las Vegas but wishing we were.

I know it's hard to believe, Jill, but I'm jealous of this weekend! I love basketball and haven't been to a good games in years. And even though sports aren't your thing, I'm glad you got to spend the weekend with your friends! What fun.

And, um, where are the recipes for those rolls? Or better yet, overnight shipping might work for a home delivery . . .
