This is my friend Valerie, her husband Nathan, and two of their children, Lincoln and Drew. Recently I did the math. Valerie and I have been friends for over 20 years! We met during our sophomore year of high school in Mr. Zeeman’s English class, I think while discussing the book Great Expectations. It must have been a very bonding sort of discussion because we’ve managed to stay friends over these many years despite never really living anywhere near each other since we left for college.
As I announced on my last blog post, I just under went vision correction surgery this last week. Valerie’s husband Nathan is an ophthalmologist and a very good one. He was the doctor who performed my surgery. He did a fabulous job and each day as I begin to see more clearly, I become more and more grateful to he and Valerie for helping me out in this way. They treated me very well.
Valerie and Nathan live in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, so in order to have Nathan do the surgery I flew out to their place and stayed for a few days. Despite the fact that I was nearly blind for the duration of my visit we managed to have a great time. We went shopping for clothes and furniture, planned out some decorating options for Valerie’s new home, toured their beautiful community, went out to eat, looked through scrapbooks of memories, attended a hockey game, and talked until our faces fell off.
It was great to see Valerie’s life in action. We talk on the phone fairly often, but it was nice to get a visual of everything she has described over the phone. She and Nathan are very dedicated parents and also serve tirelessly in the church. Valerie is the Relief Society president in her ward and she is dedicated to her calling. I was impressed and inspired.
As far as my vision is concerned, you can all rest easy. I didn’t go blind. My eye sight is still a bit on the blurry side but I told this is to be expected with PRK so I’m just waiting patiently as my eye heal themselves. Nathan said it could take up to four weeks before I can see 20/20. I can’t wait! Sadly, my travel camera is broken so I didn’t get any pictures of my trip. It’s a real shame too because I looked awesome with yellow iodine painted on my face and my eye’s taped wide open. The eye shields I had to wear post surgery were pretty sexy too.
Thanks to all who took care of my kids during my trip. I appreciate all of you who are so willing to help me out when I need to be gone. Thanks again to Val and Nathan from the bottom of my heart. I’ll be forever in your debt. Love you guys! If there is ever anything you need, especially in the way of computer help, just let us know. I’ll get Mike on it.

so glad it went well and that you had a fun trip!
I'm so relieved it went well! How fun to see an old pal and get 20/20 vision at the same time...
Funny, Mr. Zeemon's class is where I met a lot of the friends I stay in touch with from high school too! I'm glad you got to go stay with them in MO. I wish so bad that they lived closer! Good luck with the eyes!
yeah for new eyes. now they better work:) fun stuff jilliana.
This is the stuff sci fi movies are made of. I mean really, lasers that fix your eyes?!? Maybe your eyes will go above and beyond repair duty and give you x-ray vision while they're at it.
How was it being blind? Eyes taped open?!? Makes mine water.
Glad it went well!
You are brave... I'm glad you're not blind... happy Thanksgiving!!
*phew* I was worried sick. But I had to stop reading the description...
girl chat AND new eyes all in one trip!! Wow, you scored!
So jealous! Except the part about needing eye surgery to see without glasses or contacts. I think it was making sandwiches and trapping mice at Cutler's that really cemented your friendship with Val. :) No need to give this "Mr. Zeemon" so much credit.
I am so happy for you!! Yay!! I always try to imagine what it would feel like to open my eyes and not be able to see clearly. I imagine the frustration and irritability I would feel. I am soooo glad you got to have the sugery and it went well!!
Valerie looks just as beautiful as HS! Tell her that I said "Hi!"
Sounds like an insightful trip for you. So glad you went.
Jill, I missed this discussion at the cabin. Wow, I am so happy that you have such nice friends and I will be praying that you will be seeing clearly very soon. OXOXO
