Summer just wouldn’t be summer in these parts without snow cones. Luckily, someone set up a shaved ice shack just two blocks from our house (not that surprising since there is one on almost every corner in town). We’ve been frequent customers at the Sno Cafe these days as the temperatures climb up into the hundreds. A cup of flavored ice is just the thing to help one cool down from the inside out.
Last week we had our lovely nieces visiting from Pennsylvania. We made at least two trips for snow cones during their three day visit. (Check out their sun burns. Lots of time in the pool can be blamed) We loved having Sarah and Megan here. Wish they could stay forever. There’s nothing like the connection between cousins. It’s unique and wonderful.
Out back at the snow shack there are a couple of coin operated rides that the kids seem to find thrilling for some reason. I always bring a pocket of quarters along so the boys can ride with Buzz and Pooh Bear as they crunch and sip their syrupy snow.
I love the Pirate look Jonathan gives me every time he has to face the sun for a photo. Isn’t it charming?
There are all kinds of exciting flavor combinations available at the Sno Cafe, but we’re purist. Jonathan always gets Watermelon. Jeffrey loves Black Raspberry, and Mike always sticks with his beloved Black Cherry. Only Mary Kate is adventurous enough to branch out to other flavors. Her recent favorite, French Vanilla. Bleck!
Me, I stick with Pink Lemon Sour, with only half the syrup, maybe a bit less. I don’t like full saturation, much too sweet with all that high fructose corn syrup. I like mostly ice, a little bit of lemon flavor. When I get to the bottom of my cup I’m crunching pure ice, chilling, teeth numbing, cold perfection.
It’s supposed to be a scorcher today, temperatures in the hundreds. Looks like a trip to our snow shack will be in order. Here I come cold and lovely Pink Lemon Sour.

That looks delicious. I haven't had shaved ice once this summer!
Mary Kate and Megan came to my parents homecoming with the grandparents. All they did was steal grapes and refuse to do the dishes. I've decided I like them. :)
Sounds like the sno shack is just your kind of place, you little ice cruncher.
Blue raspberry is the only true and living shaved ice flavor.
That looks like a fun family outing.
I am surprised that you would venture out in the Utah heat to get the cold treats. But again, you guys are all about having fun and adventures.
I'm with you on the flavor and 1/2 the syrup, Jill! Yum! Thanks so much for hosting Sarah and Megan. I know they had a GREAT time with all of you!
