I have a new, little (and I mean little.. weighing in at only 5 lbs 4 oz) niece. She is perfect, and the most beautiful preemie I have ever seen. My sister-in-law Laura and her husband Tim came to Utah last week for the funeral of Mike’s grandma. They were scheduled to fly home to Boston on Saturday after the funeral, but late Friday night Laura’s water broke. That quickly took care of their trip home, and to our delight Laura give birth to her first baby girl here in Utah, where we were able to actually see her before she turned two! Although born 5 weeks early, she is doing remarkably well and is very adept at snuggling in her pink blankie and looking adorable.
The picture above was taken through the glass at the NICU. I had to sneak in under an assumed name (thanks Cami) in order to hold her, but this little deception (okay, big deception) was worth it. I could have sat there and snuggled her all day.
Being there in the NICU with Laura, holding my new niece, I couldn’t help but think back about six years ago when my twins were born prematurely as well and spent some time in the NICU . Due to the stress of having premature twins and some serious postpartum issues, bringing our babies home was difficult to say the least. My sweet sister-in-law Laura (along with my mother) practically moved into our house to help out. Laura got up almost every single night to help feed the babies, not to mention all the bathrooms she cleaned, stories she made up for Mary Kate, diapers she changed, errands she ran, or sympathy crying she did for me, all the while trying to stay on top of her master’s studies at BYU. When I think about those difficult weeks long ago, one person I will always be grateful for is Laura. I will love her forever for her for what she did.

Over the years Laura has been so good to me, to Michael, and especially to my children. She didn’t marry and have children until relatively later in life, so she spent all her mothering energy on her nieces and nephews. My children have always been blessed to be the recipients of all that energy and love.

Now Laura has a baby of her own. Guaranteed, she will be an awesome mother. She’s had tons of practice! She’s also waited a long time to have a baby of her own so she won’t take it for granted. My new niece is one lucky girl.
Laura, we wish we could give you back a little bit of what you’ve given us over the years. If you need anything that we can possibly give you from miles away, don’t hesitate to ask. We can’t wait to watch you be a mommy.
P.S. Nobody ask me what the baby’s name is! Laura has been known to take her time when making decisions. She’s taking her time with this one. I’ll let you know when baby has a name.

Congratulations to all, she is beautiful - that is so fun you got to see her right away!
and I love the soccer pictures & stories... I love watching little kids play soccer!
ps, I never saw you on TV....will you please please send me a DVD?? or better yet deliver/let me pick it up :)
What a sweet little bundle of joy. Yes, I do have the pump if you want it. I hope Laura is getting enough rest before she has to head home. I'm glad everything turned out okay. I'm surprised they let her on the airplane that close to her due date. Congrats! on your new niece.
Jill, I didn't need yet another reason to cry. :) Thanks for this post - it's very generous and unwarranted. I would do anything for you guys. The hardest part of moving to Boston for me was leaving your family - I used to cry on the train because I missed your kids so bad (and you guys). You've been really good to me over the years, and I appreciate you so much.
And Belinda, I definitely learned my lesson about flying so close to my due date - never again!!!
Laura did make those weeks after the twins were born not only bearable, but fun. Laura, I'm so grateful for your help with Jill's family that I would gladly come and help with your baby. I think we're a good team. Congratulations!
Ohh!! Look at how tiny she is! So sweet :)I really enjoyed this post and the backstory you gave to it.
Wonderful post, Cami. :) My kids also are so much the better for having an Aunt Laura. Even though this cute little baby is the first she's given birth to, she's only the next in a long line of lucky children to be loved by Laura. She Who Has Not Been Named is one lucky little gal!
Janice - that is a fantastic offer, because they've decided to make me take my baby home tomorrow. They won't let me take the heart and respiratory monitors home, though, so it would be great if you could come watch our baby 24 hours a day to make sure she's breathing.
Laura
Congrats, I am so happy for you. When was she born, on Friday or Saturday? So cute. I remeber we would watch Jeffery and Jonathan together when Jill and Mike went with Marykate to Lake Powell, do you remember that? That was so much fun, I am glad we got to know each other. That is awesome that you helped out when Jeffery and Jonathan were born along with AUnt Janice and Lynett. Congrats, Laura, and thanks for helping me out with school.
I am so excited to because I have a new niece too- Julie had a baby girl today this morning like at 10:15- so her birthday is today, March 15, 2010, and Joyce has a sister! We are still waiting to hear back what her name will be, they have not decided yet. I love and miss you all

Congrats to Laura, the baby IS beautiful. I sure love girls!
You sound like a great person, and I know Jill wouldn't have said all that if it weren't true.
