Ever since Grandpa Johnson passed away this last June, the family has been working to tie up the loose ends of he and Grandma's estate. Part of the estate is a piece of property in Nibley my Grandpa has owned for years and years. He used the land primarily for raising horses and has a stable/riding arena/storage unit/workshop there. The family is now in the process of selling the land and some members of the family have been cleaning out the building, gathering anything that anyone might want before the sale happens.
I decided to take the kids up to Cache Valley Thursday for a last visit to Grandpa's Ranch (as some of us fondly call it). It turned out to be quite the nostalgic day. I walked through the building and around the property snapping pictures of everything that reminded me of Grandpa and listened while Aunt Kathy told hilarious stories about Grandpa and the "stuff" that fills the spaces.
Grandpa had many endearing quirks. One of them was his obsessive drive to find a deal. The building at the ranch is packed to the gills with Grandpa's "deals." Many years ago, Salmon's, an old hardware store in Logan had a "going out of business" sale. Grandpa went in to that store and bought everything, yes everything, including the bins and shelves that the store used for display purposes. He got it all for a song. He brought his purchases to the ranch and painstaking stored and labeled everything, thinking that for sure he would use it all eventually. Most of it is still there. We all got a chuckle opening the bins and laughing about how absolutely delighted Grandpa was with his incredible luck. My cousin Jon Paul loaded up his truck bed with all the hardware and headed off to the scrap metal yard to make some easy cash. He got $65 for all of it. I wonder if that's what Grandpa paid in the first place?

Grandpa was a dentist by trade, but he had many hobbies that he relished. He built houses, did wood work, raised Arabian horses, fiddled with tractors, took computer classes, found deals, traveled everywhere, and made friends with all kinds of people who needed a friend. Grandpa definitely got the most out of his life, something I would like to emulate more.

Someone is buying Grandpa's old, trusty tractor, the one he used to plow the neighborhood driveways after all the Cache Valley snow storms. We took the kids for a last ride. Jeffrey was thrilled to death with this. On our drive home, he exclaimed, "We sure had a long, fun time on the tractor this day, huh mom!" Yep Jeffrey, it was a long, fun day.

Wow...for some reason I'm tearing up! I sure loved the old guy, despite the incessant teasing! My inlaws came to his viewing and asked if I knew him. Oh yeah, and boy could he joke around!
I'm saddened everytime I go to Nibley or to their home in Providence. There was something so wonderful about Mom and Dad that their absence is a very tangible thing. I'm sure it was hard for Dad when he sold his mother and father's home in Beaver Dam, but he kept that place alive for all of us through his stories. We will do the same. I loved your pictures and I know there were many more of them taken on Thursday. We will remember!
Wow, I learned so much about your Grandpa Johnson and I feel so connected to him now. Among other things, I never knew that he raised Arabians (I used to barrel-race with an Arabian), bought out a hardware store (I've always wanted to do that) or was a dentist (hey, I've even been to a dentist a few times in my life). Nice tribute!
So sweet, Jill. I know you miss him! I'm so glad that you went and took pictures-make the memories last, right?
I have to say...I think your grandpa and my husband have a couple of things in common. Zack is a dentist by occupation and also, I can absolutely see him buying out a hardware store just because it is an AWESOME deal. Great tribute.
I'm sorry. I guess I'm signed in under my mom. That was Karen writing that last comment.
Jill - I loved this, thanks for the write up. It made me wish so bad that we were there with you that day. I wanted Joyce to see the "ranch" before it leaves the family. Where else could she find lockers full of random stuff? She loves those kind of toys. I love you.
Jill. I love this post as well. I've been sentimental this year about Grandma and Grandpa - feeling the void they left behind - the physical evidence you show and talk about heightens the feeling. I love you.
What a sentimental journey down memory lane. You have a lot of your grandpa in you, except for the part of saving everything. Jacob wanted to watch the video clip over and over again. Could you have made it a little longer? He almost starting swinging on the gate himself. When he saw your mom, Jeffrey & Jonathan on the tractor he kept saying, "I want a ride too". Their property sounds like the perfect property for us. I wish it was closer.
I feel so blessed that I was able to associate with Vere & Winnie during my entire childhood, and not just as a result of marrying into the family. Vere's picture sits on our piano & I can't help but smile each time I see it. He truly was one in a million.
Jill, I love the picture of the stable on your post. As I drove away on Thursday, I saw it through the trees and I was overwhelmed with love--I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. I mean, who paints "Big J's Arabians" on their stable? Who collects Arabian horses and then clears out hardware stores? He was such a character--I miss him.
