3rd Annual Neighborhood Bonfire

bonfire 2010 099

When you’ve done something consistently for three years in a row, have you earned the right to call it a tradition? If so, then we had our traditional neighborhood bonfire on Monday night, and it was a roaring success. The neighbors turn out in droves and there was fire, food, and fun.

Three years ago I organized our first bonfire. The idea is that instead of doing the traditional neighbor gifts, we all gather together around a warm fire…chat, eat treats, listen to Christmas music, and enjoy each others company. Then the money we would have spent on gifts for each other is donated to a charitable cause. For the most part, our neighborhood seems to enjoy this tradition and I plan on keeping it up. In fact, I look forward to it now. We really have the best neighborhood; so many fabulous people who know how to have a good time. The holidays are busy and rushed and often we don’t take the time to visit with each other. I like our bonfire tradition because it allows for enjoying friends and family, and that’s what Christmas is all about. Right?

Mike is always in charge of the fire. He uses his boy scout skills (and gasoline) to create the token blaze. In past years the fire has been essential for warming cold fingers and toes (and roasting marshmallows), but this year it was mostly for ambiance. It was so warm the kids were running around without their coats. I personally missed the snow factor, but I think I was alone in that longing. Everyone else was glad for the warm weather and lack of white stuff. It really was a lovely night for a gathering.

The boys like a good fire. This picture was taken before they spilled hot chocolate down the front of their coats, which they do every year. It’s their tradition.

Each family brings a plate of treats for the refreshment table. There’s always a good variety of treats to nibble, and hot chocolate taste best on bonfire night. My neighbor Bruce suggested doughnuts for next year. I think he might be on to something…doughnuts and hot chocolate do make a good combo.

My sweet neighbor and friend Colette always brings her special Belgian waffle cookies (I can’t remember their official name). They’re Mary Kate’s favorite and she looks forward to them every year. My neighbor Devron loves them too. He was away on a business trip this year, so we secretly stashed some in my truck so he wouldn’t miss out entirely. Colette’s specialties go fast so we had to act quickly. You’re welcome Dev!

My thirteen year old neighbor Dallas made this adorable and delicious Santa cake just for the occasion. I love a man who can bake and play football. Go Dallas! (Jeffrey ate Santa’s nose right off the bat because he can’t resist a gumdrop!)

I love traditions. I love my neighbors. I love this bonfire. We got a trunk full of food for the Food Bank which my neighbor Lee’s Jiffy Lube store will match, can for can and dollar for dollar.

Thanks to all who contributed and helped make it happen. I’m still basking in the glow of this fire. Merry Christmas!

Pizelles? Are those what the tasty Belgian cookies are called? If so, I love 'em, too. Looks like an awesome night!

Is this bonfire in the road? Or on the sidewalk? I really like this tradition. We are so close to neighbors during lawnmowing and irrigating time, but become recluses when the snowflakes fly and inversions overtake the land!

Maybe next year in my new neighborhood. You have to be careful what traditions you start because everyone expects it every year. Miss all you guys. It looked wonderful. I especially was impressed with Dallis' cake.
